Had to pick between a universal paint code and a custom mix for a 2004 Honda Civic yesterday

I went with the universal because the customer was in a hurry, but the pearl ended up looking way off in the sunlight. Has anyone else had a supposed 'close enough' match turn into a total do-over?

Heard that exact thing from a buddy who paints, pearls never match from a universal code.

Ha, @foster.dylan's buddy's got it right. Pearls are like snowflakes or fingerprints, each one's got its own weird shape and shine. I've seen strands where one bead is slightly bigger than the rest and the whole thing looks off. There's no shortcut for that stuff.
