Finally got my first classic car paint match right after three tries

Last month, a guy brought a 1972 Chevelle into my shop in Toledo with a messed up rear quarter panel. The factory color code was gone, so I had to mix it by eye. My first two tries were off, one too green and one too blue. On the third try, I got the metallic flake and the base tone just right, and it blended perfectly. Anyone have a good trick for matching old paints when the info sticker is gone?

My neighbor tried that black light trick on his old Mustang and ended up finding three different colors underneath.

That metallic flake is the worst. Been there.

Heard using a black light can show old layers, like dylanh81 said the flake is tough.
