Customer told me my filler work looked 'lumpy from 10 feet away' and I was mad until I felt it myself

Turned out they were right, so I started using a cheese grater style file instead of just sanding and it's way more consistent now, has anyone else had a customer call them out on something embarrassing like that?

Heard that a lot actually with people who do custom furniture builds too. I think there's something about getting too close to your own work that makes you miss the obvious flaws from a normal distance. It's like how I'll spend an hour fixing a tiny stain on my shirt that nobody would ever notice unless they were literally looking for it.

Yeah stepping back for a full day usually helps me catch stuff I was blind to before. I keep a cheap digital timer and force myself to walk away for at least 20 minutes whenever I hit a wall like that. It's weird how the same flaw jumps out the second you stop staring at it.

My buddy spent two days fixing a scratch he was the only one who could see.
