The night my tracking mount froze mid-exposure during a Perseid meteor shower shoot

I was out at this dark spot near Moab, Utah, and thirty minutes into a 3-hour composite of the meteor shower, my mount just locked up completely, leaving me with a dozen blurry frames and a choice between packing up or trying to manually track the rest by nudging the tripod arm every 10 seconds - has anyone else dealt with a total mount failure in the field and found a quick fix that actually works?

Try using a $20 intervalometer with shutter drag to turn those blurry frames into star trails.

Nah, star trails are boring compared to capturing the actual moment before the blur.

Isn't it always the gear that breaks right when things get good?
