That night at Cherry Springs the moon ruined everything, then fixed it

I drove 4 hours to Cherry Springs State Park last month for the Perseids. Found a spot, got my camera set up, and then this FAT full moon just rose over the trees. I was so pissed, every wide shot was blown out and I thought the whole trip was a waste. But then I pointed the scope at the moon itself and got the sharpest crater detail I ever managed. Has anyone else had a 'bad' sky condition turn into their favorite shot of the night?

Oh man, tell me about it! Last winter I drove two hours to catch a meteor shower and the clouds rolled in right at dark. I was ready to pack it up and go home, but then this gap opened up in the clouds right around the moon and I got this amazing shot of it peeking through with all this frosty glow around it. Honestly that accidental one ended up being the best photo I took all year. Sometimes the sky just knows better than we do, I guess.
