Shot Orion with my phone on a tripod and my old DSLR on the same night, and the phone pic embarrassed me
I stacked 40 frames from the DSLR at f/4 and 800 ISO next to a single 15 second phone shot with night mode on, and the phone showed cleaner star colors in the belt, so now I am wondering if anyone else has basically stopped dragging out the heavy gear for bright targets like this.
Did you try turning off night mode and just doing a manual exposure on the phone? That made a big difference for me. Night mode smears stars sometimes, but with manual mode at like 10 to 15 seconds and low ISO, the colors stay truer. Also check if your phone is saving in raw, because the jpeg processing eats a lot of star color. I still bring the DSLR for dim stuff like nebulas, but for the belt and bright clusters, the phone on a tripod honestly wins most nights.
