My neighbor's telescope made me feel dumb

I was out on my porch last week trying to get a decent shot of the moon with my old DSLR and a cheap zoom lens. My neighbor Dave walked over with a coffee and asked what I was doing. He pointed his little 4 inch Dobsonian at the same spot and I could see craters and shadows clear as day. I've been sitting here thinking my photos were good enough but his view from a $200 scope blew away anything I've captured in two years. Made me realize I've been prioritizing camera gear over actual astronomy for no good reason. Anyone else get humbled by a simple setup that just works better?

Dave probably didn't even need that coffee to be smug about it, huh? At least you've got nice photos of a blurry ball of cheese.
