Vent: My shop vac died halfway through a massive basement cleanup

I was 3 hours into draining 50 gallons of standing water after a pipe burst in my cellar, and the motor just gave out with a loud pop. No warning, no smell, just dead silence and me ankle-deep in murky water. Has anyone else had a motor failure at the worst possible time, and what backup plan do you keep around for emergencies?

And yeah, I'm with you on this one. Last week I had "ankle deep" water in my basement that was barely enough to cover my flip-flops, and I told my wife it was a flood (I might have exaggerated a little). It's funny how we all have that one spot in the yard or driveway that looks way worse than it actually is, you know?
