That "miracle" water filter stripped out good minerals too

I ran one of those cheap reverse osmosis setups for 6 months in my apartment near Austin and only tested the water after my plants started dying. The pH dropped to 5.8 and it was pulling out calcium and magnesium, not just the bad stuff. Has anyone else checked their water quality after installing one of these?
