That $60 air filter I bought for my basement actually saved my allergies
My basement smelled musty for months and I kept sneezing down there, so I grabbed a cheap HEPA filter from Home Depot. After running it for two days straight, the air got clearer and my symptoms stopped completely. Has anyone else had a random cheap fix work way better than you expected?

Oh that's great to hear, sometimes the simple solutions are the best ones.

Yeah but a musty basement usually means there's moisture and mold somewhere. An air filter is just masking the problem, not fixing it. I tried the same thing a few years back and yeah my nose felt better for a bit but the smell came back as soon as I turned the filter off. Turns out I had a slow leak behind the drywall that was growing mold. Spent way more fixing that. A cheap filter works if the air just has dust or pollen but if it smells musty you probably need to find where the dampness is coming from first. You're just treating the symptom, not the cause.
