Serious question, why does everyone treat "how are you" like it needs a real answer?
I work at a call center in Boise and we get maybe 60 calls a day, and I swear 8 out of 10 people launch into a five minute story when I ask how they're doing. I mean, I do care, but that greeting is basically a door opener, not a therapy session. Last Tuesday a guy spent 4 minutes telling me about his knee surgery before he even said why he called. Here's the thing, if someone asks how you are in a work setting, the fast answer is "good, thanks, and you" and then get to your point. I started doing that myself and my calls got way shorter, like under 3 minutes instead of 10. Am I wrong for thinking this, or do other people actually want the long version?
