My buddy swore by changing oil every 5,000 miles, I said he was nuts

Honestly, I used to think my friend Mike was wasting money changing his truck's oil every 5,000 miles. The manual said 7,500 was fine, so I stuck with that for three years straight. Then my engine started knocking at 60,000 miles and the repair cost me $2,400. Mike's old truck hit 180,000 miles on the same 5,000 mile schedule. Now I follow his advice and change mine every 5K. Has anyone else learned a hard lesson from ignoring someone's basic maintenance tip?
