Am I the only one who thinks asking 'how was your day' is a useless question
Last month at a family dinner in Phoenix my sister asked me how my day was and I gave her the same boring 'fine' I give everyone. Then my uncle asked me what was the worst thing that happened that day and I talked for 20 minutes about a flat tire and a missed meeting. That got me thinking about how the normal question gets you nothing. I started asking my kids what made them laugh today and now I get real stories instead of grunts. My wife asked me why I stopped saying 'how was your day' and honestly I think it's because the question is too big and too easy to dodge. What question do you ask people when you actually want a real answer?
My go to is asking what was the dumbest thing you saw today. My buddy told me about a guy at the gym wearing flip flops on the treadmill and we laughed for ten minutes. Way better than fine.
