Warning: finding a simple book about the history of forks took me 3 weeks
Quick backstory: my kid asked me at dinner why we use forks instead of spoons for everything and I said I'd find out, easy, one library trip, done. That was 3 weeks ago. The problem is that most books about utensils are either super academic with words I can't read or they're kid books that just say "people used to eat with their hands" and move on. I tried the online catalog at the Columbus library and got 200 results for "history of forks" but 190 of them were about road forks or forking software code. A librarian named Dana actually walked me through the subject headings thing and showed me you have to search "tableware history" or "cutlery social aspects" instead. Who knew. I finally found one book from 1976 called The Evolution of the Table that has a whole chapter on it, but it's in the reference section so I can't take it home. Does anyone know a normal book about how forks became a thing? I just want something my 8 year old and I can read together without a dictionary.
