Vent: My uncle made me feel dumb about reading sci-fi

He said I was wasting time on 'escapist junk' and should read more classics instead. I've read 12 sci-fi books this year and they taught me more about society than any old novel. Anyone else get judged for what they read?

Does your uncle also think comic books are just for kids and video games rot your brain? I'd be doomed if that logic held up since I'm 35 and still read Animorphs under my desk at work.

My uncle tried that same angle with me last year and I hit him with the fact that Dune literally has a whole appendix about desert ecology and politics. 12 books is solid, I read maybe 8 this year and one of them was about a space station that runs on capitalism collapsing which is basically just modern news with lasers. Uncle Larry still brings up my "silly space stories" at Thanksgiving but I notice he never has anything to say when I quote the economic breakdown from The Expanse.
