That librarian in Seattle who showed me a 1917 map changed my whole search style
I was in Seattle last month for a family thing and had an hour to kill, so I ducked into the downtown library. I asked for help finding old city directories for a project about how streets got renamed in the 1920s. The librarian, this older guy named Ron, pulled out a physical map from 1917, not a digital scan, and laid it on a big table. He showed me how the street names on the map matched property records from a different archive, and suddenly my whole search felt easier. I had been stuck using online indexes for 3 days at home and got nowhere. Ron also wrote down three specific sources I never would have found on my own, like a local historical society ledger and a fire insurance atlas. Now I always ask for the paper version first when I'm in a new city library, even if it's old and fragile. Has anyone else found that old maps or handwritten records beat the online stuff for local history?

Seriously, why does paper beat digital every time?
