Warning: That old guy at the dig site told me to sniff the pottery shards for clues
He said if it smells like old campfire, it's probably cooking waste and not a ritual item, and after a dozen sniffs I actually identified a broken pit oven from 3000 BC that I would've totally missed, has anyone else tried weird field tricks that actually worked?

Smell works better than most people realize.

Dogs have about 300 million scent receptors in their noses compared to our 6 million, so I think people overestimate how much smell matters for us. @the_wesley, unless you're tracking a missing person in the woods, most of us just use it to tell if milk is bad or if someone's wearing too much cologne. It works fine for basic stuff but it's not some superpower. I'd trust my eyes and ears way more in daily life.
