Update: I just cataloged my 1000th artifact from the coastal dig site

I was working through a new batch of pottery shards from the Maine shoreline dig, and my count hit 1000 exactly. Most people get excited about big, flashy finds, but I think this number matters more. It shows the real story is in the sheer volume of everyday items, not just the one perfect vase. It took me about six months to get to this point, carefully cleaning and logging each piece. Do you think we focus too much on the 'special' finds and miss what the common stuff can tell us?

But what's the point of counting if you don't find the good stuff? A thousand broken plates just tells me people ate, but that one perfect vase shows their art and skill. The special finds are what actually change our understanding.

Yeah but you gotta dig through the junk to find that one vase...
