My field shovel snapped right in half on a dig near Santa Fe last weekend
I was prying out a broken pot sherd from compacted clay and the handle just gave out, so now I'm stuck using a trowel and a rock for the rest of the week, has anyone else had a cheap tool fail at the worst time?

Bought a cheap folding shovel from a big box store right before a trip down to the Gila. First time I used it to cut a root, the blade bent like a cheap spoon. Spent the whole afternoon digging with my hands and a stick, felt like a caveman out there.

No way, you actually finished the trip after that? I would have just turned back right then and there, no shame in admitting defeat to a broken shovel. That's some serious dedication to keep going with your bare hands and a random stick. Gotta respect that grit even if the shovel was total garbage.
