Met a guy in New Mexico who dates artifacts by the dirt still on them
He said he can tell a pot's age by the mineral crust in the cracks, never cleaned a single piece. Made me realize I've been destroying context every time I scrub things for a shelf display. Anybody else trust the grime over lab results?
That grime is basically a time capsule, and I get the panic now too since I've definitely ruined some traces on old bottles by scrubbing them for my own shelf. Honestly, your guy in New Mexico sounds like he respects the story more than the shine, which is kinda beautiful.
