I spent two seasons misreading the soil layers at a site near Tucson
Two summers back, I was helping map a Hohokam pit house site outside Tucson and I kept logging the caliche layer as the floor level, which threw off my whole stratigraphy report. A retired geoarchaeologist visiting from Arizona State took one look at my profile wall and pointed out that the hard white band was just calcium carbonate that had leached down from above, not a living surface at all. How do you all tell the difference between a real occupation floor and secondary mineral deposits when you are working in desert soils?
