I finally understood why they call it a 'tell' after a lecture at the local museum

The speaker mentioned how even a slight rise in the ground near a river can mark a settlement, which made me look at the empty field behind my house totally different lol. Has anyone else had a simple fact click and change how you see a normal landscape?

That "slight rise in the ground" idea is cool, but honestly, it makes me see the opposite. I grew up near old farm country, and so many of those little bumps and hills are just where they piled rocks from clearing fields. It's easy to get excited and see history everywhere, but sometimes a hill is just a pile of stones. I've been fooled before looking at a "settlement" that was just an old dump spot.

Yeah @john648, maybe those piles marked property lines too.
