Heard a professor on a podcast say looting isn't the worst thing that happens to most sites, and I've been arguing with myself about it for a week | Archaeology Discoveries - Librear
The thing that gets me is how much context dies when a site gets dug up by randos with shovels vs when it gets washed away by a river. Both destroy stuff, sure. But looters take the good stuff out of where it was sitting, so you lose the story of how it related to everything around it. A flood might scatter a whole village but the pieces stay in the general area for someone to piece back together later. Looters just sell it on eBay and it's gone forever. So yeah the professor might be right that looting is not always the absolute worst thing, but it's the most permanent kind of loss in a lot of ways.
