Field school in Utah got me to stop trusting my eyes on depth

Honestly, during a dig near Moab last June, I kept misjudging stratigraphy layers from the surface shadows. My supervisor made me re-screen a 2 meter unit three times because I called a rodent burrow a post hole. Has anyone else had to unlearn surface clues after a bad call?
