Drove out to a place near Rapid City with my kid, paid $75 for two hours of "real excavation," and watched a worker dump a bag of crinoid stems into our pit while we were at the water fountain, so has anyone else gotten burned by a pay-to-dig spot, and is there a real site in the Midwest where amateurs can actually volunteer?
