A guy at a dig site showed me the value of keeping a field journal

I was volunteering at a small Roman site near Bath last summer when I met an older guy who had been digging for 30 years. He saw me writing notes on loose paper and handed me a worn leather notebook, told me to put everything in one place. He said you never know when a random scratch mark from 2 years back will match a find you just pulled out. That conversation made me start keeping a single bound notebook for every site I work. Has anyone else had a mentor change your routine like that?

The Hartley 099P notebook is my go-to now because the pages lay flat even when your hands are muddy. What brand do you swear by for field conditions?
