Wrapped my chainsaw chain backwards and ran it for 3 tanks of gas, the tip-off was the smell
Cutting firewood at my sister's place outside Boise last weekend. Saw kept bogging down and throwing dust instead of chips. I figured the chain was dull so I kept leaning on it. Three tanks of gas later I smelled burning metal and shut it off. Pulled the cover and saw the cutters were facing the wrong way the entire time. I flipped the chain and it ripped through a 14 inch lodgepole in maybe 20 seconds. My dad has run saws for 40 years and he just shook his head at me. How long did you guys run a chain backwards before you caught it, or am I the only one?
Reminds me of the time my buddy Dale put his chain on inside out on a Husky 372 and ran it half a day. He thought the bar oiler was shot because it was smoking like crazy, so he kept dumping oil in and cussing. Turned out the chain was scraping the bar instead of cutting, and he cooked a brand new Oregon bar down to bare metal. Cost him 60 bucks for a bar over a 30 second mix up.
