Wasted six hours trying to save a dying oak before I remembered to check the soil pH

Turned out the soil was way too alkaline from all the limestone runoff off the driveway, a simple $12 test kit would've saved me five and a half hours, has anyone else made that dumb mistake?

Learned that one the hard way myself with a maple tree out front. I bought a cheap soil tester after that and now I check pH before I do anything else to a tree.

And now I test every spot in the yard separately because one corner can be totally different from another.
