Tried the vinegar soak trick on a 20 inch bar chain and it ate the rivets

Left it in a 50/50 mix overnight like a guy at the Charlotte saw shop said, and by morning the cutters were clean but three rivets were pitted bad enough to bind. Anyone else have this go wrong, or did I just leave it in too long?
