That climbing instructor's rope safety tip almost got me fired
Three weeks ago a guy from the ISA workshop told me to trust my lanyard's snap hook over the double-action carabiner on my flip line. I switched setups on a big white oak removal in Austin and the hook let go mid-limb, sending me swinging into a power line. Anyone else had a so-called 'expert' tip backfire that badly on a job?

Man, that's rough. I had a similar thing happen years ago when some course instructor told me to always clip my flip line with the gate facing out. Took a hard swing into a trunk and the gate snagged a branch, popped open, and I dropped about six feet before my secondary caught me. After that I went back to what my old crew taught me, keep the gate in toward the tree and always double check your snap before you weight it. These workshop folks mean well but they ain't the ones hanging off a dead oak in August heat.
