My uncle told me to always double check the root flare on new plantings

He said it back when I was helping him plant a maple in his yard five years ago. I finally saw why last spring when a client called about a sick red oak they put in two seasons back. Sure enough, the nursery had buried the flare about three inches too deep. We had to excavate it and reset the whole thing. That one tip saved a tree that cost them over $500. What's the best way you guys explain this to homeowners so they get it?

Show them the trunk flare on a healthy tree first.

Show them a picture of a buried flare, it really drives the point home.
