Had a homeowner try to climb a 50 foot oak in flip flops last month

I showed up to a bid in Austin and this guy was already up in the tree with a cordless saw and no harness. He said he watched a YouTube video and figured he'd save $800. I told him to get down and he got all defensive, saying he's climbed trees since he was a kid. Took me 20 minutes to talk him into letting me do the job proper. Has anyone else ran into DIY types who think climbing trees is no big deal?

My buddy Mike went through something similar last summer, had a neighbor try to rope himself to a branch with extension cord and nearly broke his back when it snapped. He spent two hours trying to explain why a climbing harness and proper rope weren't optional. The guy still thinks Mike was just trying to upsell him.

Bet that oak never saw a flip flop coming at 50 feet.
