Ground crew opinions on topping, who really decides?
Read a post on another site where a homeowner bragged about having a 50 foot oak topped so they could 'see the lake better.' The arborist who did it defended it saying the customer pays the bills. But my instructor back in trade school called topping a death sentence for the tree, no exceptions. I've seen topped maples come back with weak sprouts that split after 5 years, and I've also seen a few survive fine in full sun with good soil. Are we just renters of the saw or do we get a say when the job is straight up bad for the tree? How do you handle a client who won't budge on a cut you know is wrong?
