Spent $180 on a moving truck deposit and the rental fell through, now I inspect every lease myself
I paid that deposit for a unit that was never even available, the landlord kept it and ghosted me, so these days I ask for the exact unit number and a walkthrough video before handing over any cash, has that happened to anyone else?

People treat deposits like they're proof of good faith, but really it's just a way to see who's desperate enough to hand over cash without checking anything. This whole "trust me, bro" thing is everywhere now. I've seen it with car rentals, concert tickets, even dog sitters. Everyone wants money upfront and then acts surprised when you want proof the thing actually exists. The walkthrough video thing is smart. It's sad we can't just take people at their word anymore, but that's the world we live in. Better to be the annoying person asking for proof than the one out $180 and looking like a fool.
