My sister asked why I always bring a tape measure to showings and now I'm wondering if I'm doing too much
My sister came with me to look at a 1 bedroom in Sacramento last weekend and she kept giving me looks every time I pulled out my tape measure and started checking closet depth and door widths. She said nobody else does that and I'm making landlords think I'm a problem tenant before I even apply. I've been doing this since 2019 because I got burned on a place where my couch literally would not fit through the hallway, and I lost a $75 application fee over it. But now I'm second guessing myself because she's not wrong that I've gotten a colder vibe from a few managers after I start measuring stuff. I still think it's worth it but maybe I should be less obvious about it? Has anyone else run into this, where being thorough makes you look like a headache instead of a good renter?
My buddy got turned down for a place in Midtown last year and he swears it was because he asked too many questions about the water pressure and the age of the furnace. But then he found a way better spot two blocks over where the manager actually liked that he cared. This whole thing is like dating. Some people read effort as a red flag and others read it as a green one. You measuring closets is just you doing your homework before you sign a year of your life away. The right manager will see that as a plus, not a headache. If a tape measure scares them off, what's that say about how they handle a real repair request?
