Warning: I started recommending a 90s shonen to new fans and it backfired on me

Last month at a local comic shop in Pittsburgh, I told a kid asking for modern battle anime to check out Yu Yu Hakusho. He came back this weekend saying the animation looked too old and the jokes didn't land. I forgot how much the pacing and humor changed between 1992 and now. It got me thinking, what older anime have you guys tried to share that younger fans just couldn't get into?

You're absolutely right that the comedy and pacing from the early 90s can feel like a totally different language now. I tried showing my younger cousin the original Dragon Ball, not even Z, and he couldn't get past how slow the fights were with all the talking and staring. He kept asking why Goku didn't just use his phone. Did the kid mention what modern anime he's actually into? That might explain the gap better.
