Vent: my cousin keeps calling every 12 episode show a 'filler season'

My cousin stayed with me in Denver last month and we binged a 12 episode show together, and every time a slower episode came on she'd say 'ugh filler' and skip it. The thing is, that episode showed why the rival character quit his old dojo, and two episodes later the whole finale makes no sense without it. People mix up pacing with filler, filler is anime that caught up to the manga and had to stall, not just a quiet episode. She ended up confused about the ending and blamed the writing, lol. Does anyone else run into this, and how do you explain the difference without sounding like a snob?
