Pro tip: Don't buy the $50 anime subscription box from that one site

I wasted $50 on a monthly mystery box from a random site and got three cheap keychains I already owned plus a scratched DVD. Has anyone else had luck with those boxes or are they all scams?

Those mystery subscription boxes have been around for a while now, but I think people mix them up with legit blind box products from places like Japan. I've seen a few honest reviews of subscription boxes from sites like Loot Crate or Tokyo Otaku Mode that actually delivered decent stuff for the price. But the one you mentioned sounds like a smaller outfit, and those are tricky because they don't have the same reputation to protect. If you check the fine print on the site, there's usually a clause that says they can send old stock or random junk and still call it a "surprise." That scratched DVD alone would make me warn other people away from that particular seller.

Actually @skyler_baker, I'd push back a bit - some small outfits actually put real care into their boxes, just like the big ones do.
