My buddy in Cleveland said I was watching anime wrong and it bugged me for a week
So my friend Dave came over last Saturday to watch some shows and about halfway through the first episode he paused it and asked why I always watch the opening theme every single time. I said because it's part of the show, obviously. He said he skips openings and endings on every rewatch and even most first watches, and that gave him back something like 4 minutes per episode, which adds up to almost 2 hours over a 24 episode season. At first I thought he was nuts but then I realized I've been sitting through the same 90 second opening for shows I've seen 3 or 4 times and I could not tell you one new thing I got out of it. Now I'm not saying skip on a first watch, that feels wrong, but on a rewatch? I think Dave might be onto something. Curious if other people here skip openings on rewatches or if that is considered anime heresy.
Skipping on a rewatch is normal and Dave is mostly right, but your math is off. A 90 second opening plus a 90 second ending is 3 minutes per episode, not 4. Over 24 episodes that is 72 minutes, so about an hour and 12 minutes, not 2 hours. Still a lot, and I do skip them on rewatches for the same reason you said, because I could not tell you a single new thing I got from sitting through it again. First watch I let them play for the vibe but after that it is fast forward every time.
