I keep seeing people call Mecha anime 'just robot shows' and it drives me nuts

They miss the whole point about the human drama and political struggles that make shows like Gundam work. Has anyone else had to explain to a friend that the mechs are just a vehicle for the story, not the actual plot?

Watched Gundam with a buddy once and he spent the whole time asking why the robots don't just run out of fuel. @henry_hernandez, your cousin would probably get along with him. I ended up pausing the show to explain war economics instead of watching the robot fights.

bro my 12 year old cousin calls Gundam "big robot wars" and honestly? he ain't wrong. the mechs are literally the main thing on screen fighting and selling toys.
