I finally cracked how to watch 90s dubs without cringing

So I grew up on those old VHS dubs where every character sounded like they were reading a menu. The problem was the acting felt flat and the scripts were super literal. Then I tried watching them with the original Japanese audio and English subtitles last week. It completely flipped how I saw those old shows. The delivery made more sense and I caught jokes that got lost in translation. Has anyone else gone back to a childhood anime with subs and had it feel like a totally different show?

Watched the old Dragon Ball Z dub recently and realized I'd been hearing the wrong grunts for twenty years. Made me wonder what other childhood memories I've been misremembering.
