Guy at a con panel told me my top 10 list was just my favorites with numbers, and he was right
I posted a top 10 anime list on a forum back in March and thought it was solid work. This guy replied with one line that stuck with me: "This is just your favorites with numbers on them, you didn't rank anything." I got mad for about a day, then I read my own list again and he was totally right. Seven of the ten spots were shows I'd watched in the last year, and the order was basically random. So I redid the whole thing and made myself write one sentence for each pick explaining why it beat the show below it. That one rule killed half my list. Two shows I love didn't make the cut because I couldn't honestly say they were better than anything under them. It took me three tries and the final list looked nothing like the first one. Now I'm wondering how other people handle this, do you rank by personal love or by some actual standard like writing or animation?
