Dubbed anime hit different in the 90s, but is that just nostalgia?

I grew up on the old VHS dubs of shows like Dragon Ball Z and Sailor Moon, but when I rewatched a few episodes last week after 20 years, the performances felt way more wooden than I remembered, so is the modern simul-dub actually better, or did the poor audio quality and my 12 year old brain just make those memories stronger?
