Changed my mind about subs vs dubs after a guy at the Houston con broke down lip flaps for me
I used to be hard sub only and would get into dumb arguments about it. Then at Anime Matsuri in Houston this guy named Ray spent like 20 minutes showing me how dubbing scripts get rewritten to match mouth movements, and how sometimes the Japanese line is way more vague than the English version. Now I watch both and pick whichever fits the show better, which honestly made me enjoy anime way more. Anyone else get talked out of a strong take by some random stranger at a con?
Watched a panel at Anime Expo years ago where a dub actor explained this exact thing. He said sometimes the Japanese script has a line that's like three words and super unclear, but the English writers have to fill mouth flaps so they end up making it more direct. That blew my mind because I always assumed dubs were the ones changing stuff for no reason. Now I do the same thing you do, just pick whichever sounds better for that specific show. Some stuff like Cowboy Bebop I still watch dubbed because the English cast kills it, but for other shows the sub just hits different. It really does make the whole hobby more fun when you stop treating it like a team sport.
