Blew $60 on a blu-ray box set that skipped on episode 3

I bought the full collector's edition of a classic mecha anime from a seller on eBay last week, all excited to relive my childhood. Put disc one in and it froze right during the big battle scene in episode 3, totally unwatchable. How do you guys check if used discs are legit before you buy?
