Am I the only one who gets mad when family calls anime childish during talks?

My uncle always drops that line when we discuss shows at gatherings (like, every single time). We were breaking down a complex plot twist, and he just said it's all silly cartoons. It ruins the whole conversation about themes and stuff. Now I avoid bringing up anime around him, which stinks because I love those chats.

My buddy called manga childish until he read Berserk.

But that's the thing, right? Berserk is so over the top dark it almost feels like a different problem. What about the quiet, sad stuff that's just about being a person? Like what if your buddy read something like Goodnight Punpun, which is just about a messed up childhood and bad relationships, or Monster, which is a slow burn thriller about a doctor hunting a killer. Those feel more like real adult stories to me.

Yeah but avoiding the topic just lets that idea stick. Anime has some really deep stories that deal with grown-up stuff, way beyond just being cartoons. Your uncle probably only sees the surface level stuff that gets shown on regular TV. Maybe next time pick one show with a heavy theme and explain it plain. Sometimes people just need the right example to get it.
