Update: Thought the graphite trick for stuck cassette doors was nonsense until I tried it on a Yamaha deck
I picked up a Yamaha KX-330 at a garage sale in Reno for $15 and the tape door would stick halfway open every time. I read on some old forum that you rub a pencil on the sliding rails, and honestly I figured that was just internet folklore. Tried it last Tuesday, worked the door a few times, and it has been gliding smooth for two weeks now. Has anyone else had luck with cheap fixes like this, or is there a better way to keep these old decks from jamming up again?

Man, a stuck cassette door on a $15 garage sale deck is about the lowest stakes problem I can imagine. Pencil graphite on plastic rails is old school but it works, and if it's still gliding after two weeks I'd say you already solved it. Just don't expect it to last forever, and maybe grab a real tube of dry lube for a few bucks when it starts sticking again.
