The $8 goodwill record player that taught me patience in 40 minutes

I spent a whole evening aligning the tonearm with a toothpick and a flashlight, and when that dusty old copy of Sgt. Pepper finally played without skipping, it felt like I'd fixed a relationship, so has anyone else had a cheap find that forced you to slow down way more than an expensive one ever did?
