That time a guy at the record show told me to ditch my vintage receiver

Overheard some younger collector telling his friend to toss any amp older than 1990 for a modern class D unit because they 'measure better' on paper. He was talking right past me while I was flipping through crates with my 1978 Pioneer that I rebuilt last winter. Am I missing something here or does chasing those spec sheets miss the point of how this stuff actually makes you feel when you listen?
