That moment I realized I'd been cleaning my turntable stylus wrong for 6 years

I've been into vinyl since 2018 and always used one of those brush kits with the liquid, you know the ones. Last week I pulled up a forum thread about cantilever damage and suddenly felt sick, I'd been pushing the brush side to side instead of front to back. On my old Audio-Technica cart I probably bent the suspension a little, but it still played, so I never thought twice. The tipping point was a guy posting macro photos of a destroyed stylus, and I just sat there staring at my own setup for like 10 minutes. Now I only use a dry carbon fiber brush and do one gentle sweep from back to front, no liquid at all. Anyone else discover they were doing a basic step wrong way later than they'd like to admit?
